My Commentary

Foreign Policy

Obama states, "When I am this party's nominee, my opponent will not be able to say that I voted for the war in Iraq; or that I gave George Bush the benefit of the doubt on Iran; or that I supported Bush-Cheney policies of not talking to leaders that we don't like. And he will not be able to say that I wavered on something as fundamental as whether or not it is ok for America to torture-because it is never ok. ...I will end the war in Iraq. ...I will close Guantanamo. I will restore habeas corpus. I will finish the fight against Al Qaeda. And I will lead the world to combat the common threats of the 21st century: nuclear weapons and terrorism; climate change and poverty; genocide and disease. And I will send once more a message to those yearning faces beyond our shores that says, "You matter to us. Your future is our future. And our moment is now."

This statement is a classic Obama statement. It mixes some truth with some falsity to paint a picture that isn't accurate. President Bush has talked to many nations. That is what the State Department does. What Bush does not want to do is to give legitimacy to regimes that truly violate human rights. Obama seems to think that shouldn't matter. He'll talk to everyone and anyone. As far as habeus corpus, that is a right reserved to every citizen of this country, not people who attack it and are sworn enemies of it. Our future is not the rest of the world's future. This is nice rhetoric, but not true.

WHAT OBAMA SAYS: Obama is the only major candidate who had the judgment to oppose the Iraq War from the beginning. He will end the war responsibly by bringing our troops home within 16 months, pressing for a political solution to Iraq's civil war, and launching the diplomatic and humanitarian initiatives that are need to bring stability to Iraq.

WHAT IT MEANS: Imagine if the Revolutionary War was fought with Obama at its head. He would have stopped the war long before America had a chance to gain its footing. Oftentimes it takes years to win a war. Obama calls it judgment. I call it luck. He was right in the beginning, but now he seems to be wrong. Where is his judgment now? His impatience is not judgment. It is calculated political hubris. What part of removing Saddam Hussein from power does Obama not like? When has there ever been a political solution to a civil war in history? There has always been fighting in civil wars. That is why they call it war. Obama has judgment. It's confused and clouded by the anti-American peaceniks that he serves. Obama speaks so much of the world and the world's needs that I am not sure if he loves America as a country or looks at it only as the piggy bank for the world. Obama is the Neville Chamberlain of our day and we all know how that worked out for Europe in World War II. War is the only solution for uprooting evil men from power. Obama doesn't seem to realize this truth.

WHAT OBAMA SAYS: Obama is willing to meet with the leaders of all nations, friend and foe. He will do the careful preparation necessary, but will signal that America is ready to come to the table, and that he is willing to lead.

WHAT IT MEANS: How many people would be willing to sit down with an enemy that has openly called your country the Great Satan, called for the destruction of Israel, is supporting militia and killers who are killing your troops, etc.? Obama would talk with friend or foe without precondition. He seems to believe that he can magically wave his wand and get people who have declared their utter hatred for you to suddenly love you. This is not only delusional, but it is dangerous. Neville Chamberlain believed he could talk Hitler down, but Hitler knew that Neville was weak and so he stalled him long enough until the German military became too strong to stop. Iran will take advantage of a weak president such as Barack because Barack has a need to feel like he is special. He believes he can talk religious zealots out of their religious belief that Israel should be wiped off the map and that America should fall. Barack is delusional if he thinks he can do that. But then again, Neville Chamberlain overestimated his ability to talk to the Axis back then. Why shouldn't Obama be given the opportunity to repeat the same mistakes or has he not read history?

WHAT OBAMA SAYS: Obama will embrace the Millennium Development Goal of cutting extreme poverty around the world in half by 2015, and he will double our foreign assistance to $50 billion to achieve that goal. He will help the world's weakest states to build healthy and educated communities, reduce poverty, develop markets, and generate wealth.

WHAT IT MEANS: Where will this money come from? At a time when the federal budget is already seeing plenty of red, where does Obama think he can get this money from? The problem with Obama is that he fails to realize that most of these countries are poor because of corrupt governments that take much of the foreign aid that we already give them to remain in power. Foreign aid only helps these corrupt governments to remain in power. Another cause of poverty is poor personal decisions. Poverty on the scale that Africa is seeing is not caused by lack of money. It is caused by corrupt governments, poor personal decisions, and many others reasons. Unless the money can be given directly to the people, it is money that is not worth spending because it only serves to keep corrupt governments in power. Corrupt governments in power do not mean prosperous people.

WHAT OBAMA SAYS: Obama believes that we must talk openly about nuclear weapons-because the best way to keep America safe is not to threaten terrorists with nuclear weapons, it's to keep nuclear weapons away from terrorists.

WHAT IT MEANS: The best defense is a good offense. The best way to keep America safe is to kill the terrorists or those who openly declare war on us and materially support those who kill or seek to kill Americans. The best way is not to fight a defensive war of trying to keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of terrorists. Obama, once again, thinks he can use his magical personality and abilities to talk and reason with people who have deep-rooted religious beliefs to destroy America.

In summary, Obama believes that he will be able to reason with terrorists, killers, and religious zealots where other respected and competent men and women have failed. The truth is that some people cannot be reasoned with. Sometimes you have to go to war to fight your enemies. The Taliban was our enemy. Saddam Hussein was our enemy. Iran is our enemy. They have declared it to be so. They seek the destruction of America. But Barack believes he can talk with them and get them to see our side and depart in peace. He is following the same failed policies of Neville Chamberlain. He promises to increase the size of our military and spend more money and resources on the troops. He also promises to increase the size and scope of the civilian agencies as well, but he fails to list what agencies those are. In other words, he wishes to spend more tax dollars than are spent today, as if another government agency will be able to solve America's problems.
