Obama states, "The teenagers and college students who left their homes to march in the streets of Birmingham and Montgomery; the mothers who walked instead of taking the bus after a long day of doing somebody else's laundry and cleaning somebody else's kitchen. They didn't brave fire hoses and Billy clubs so that their grandchildren and their great-grandchildren would still wonder at the beginning of the 21st century whether their vote would be counted; whether their civil rights would be protected by their government; whether justice would be equal and opportunity would be theirs. We have more work to do."
I have one question for Obama, when will the work be done or will the target be a never-ending, shifting target whose sole purpose is to redistribute wealth from those who never perpetrated any injustice to those who experienced no injustice? The truth is that the civil rights movement has worked. America is not a racist country, as a whole, and that is the best that we can ask for. Today's problems are primarily created by the government providing too much money and services for nothing, which has only made people lazy and irresponsible.
WHAT OBAMA SAYS: Obama will staff the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department with lawyers who prosecute civil rights violations, employment discrimination, and hate crimes instead of political cronies.
WHAT IT MEANS: Obama resorts to name-calling. Who does he think staffs the Civil Rights Division? Lawyers, of course. Obama is race-baiting, insinuating that President Bush has put ineffective people into this division who are not prosecuting violations, discrimination, etc.
WHAT OBAMA SAYS: Obama will remove discriminatory barriers to the right to vote.
WHAT IT MEANS: What country does Obama live in? I wasn't aware of any barriers to the right to vote. Could this be more race-baiting?
WHAT OBAMA SAYS: For every $1.00 earned by a man, the average woman receives only 77 cents, while African American women only get 67 cents and Latinas receive only 57 cents.
WHAT IT MEANS: There are lies and damn lies. This is a damn lie. Men, as a whole, have more education and work experience than women, African American women, and Latinas, so naturally they would make more on average. If you compare men and women who have equal education and uninterrupted work experience, then these disparities disappear all together or become almost equal. These statistics are intended to incite to anger, not paint a true and accurate picture of America. They are intended to make many groups of people feel that they are being victimized by America, business, and the like so that government can step in and right a supposed wrong that never existed. It is a classic socialist, big government pitch and it is a lie.
WHAT OBAMA SAYS: Obama will sign into law his legislation that establishes harsh penalties for those who have engaged in voter fraud and provides voters who have been misinformed with accurate and full information so they can vote.
WHAT IT MEANS: Great. the government will be the arbiter of what is accurate and full information. Now I can rest easy. The federal government is often the biggest provider of false, inaccurate information. Why would we trust them to be accurate in this case? Most likely, the government will abuse its position of power and allow only its point of view to be told. Trusting the government to be accurate is like trusting an alcoholic with alcohol. It's not a good idea.
America's history with slavery and not treating all citizens as equals is not a uniquely American sin, but has been a sin of the entire world. America has attempted to right that wrong through the fighting of the civil war and the civil rights movement. Obama is attempting to extend the government's influence in our lives by painting a picture of America that is inaccurate in order to increase the power and scope of the federal government. America is a land of opportunity more so today than at any other time. More government interference will make it less a land of opportunity and more a land of tyranny.
